When Thinking Isn’t Enough: How Somatic Therapy Helps Us Listen to the Wisdom of the Body
Post
Have you ever understood something intellectually, yet still found yourself reacting in the same way?
Perhaps you know you need to slow down, but your body stays tense? You understand cognitively that you are safe yet still feel anxious or on edge? You can explain why you people-please, shut down or become overwhelmed, but knowing where a pattern comes from doesn’t necessarily make it disappear.
This is where somatic therapy can offer a different way of understanding, processing and integrating our deeper patterns and traits.
Rather than working only with our thoughts and stories, somatic therapy brings our body, emotions and nervous system into the conversation. Your whole body is part of the conversation.
We often live predominantly from the mind. We think, analyse, problem-solve and try to make sense of what is happening to us.
But our experiences aren’t held only in our thoughts. Stress, emotions and past experiences can also show up through the body and nervous system.
Tension, a racing heart, shallow breathing, heaviness, restlessness, numbness or a desire to withdraw can all be ways our body communicates with us.
Yet many of us have learned to override these signals. We keep going, push through and tell ourselves we should be coping.
Over time, we can become disconnected from the very body that is trying to tell us what we need.
The BodyWise shift is moving From thinking about yourself to experiencing yourself.
My approach as The BodyWise Facilitator is rooted in the belief that our body holds valuable information and wisdom.
And this isn’t simply something I have learnt through my professional training. It is something I have experienced for myself.
Some years ago, my own healing journey took a significant turn when I experienced the transformative power of working with a body-based therapist. I had spent a lot of time trying to understand myself through thinking and talking, but something shifted when I began gently noticing and listening to what was happening within my body and the innate inner wisdom it shares.
That experience led me towards my own somatic training and, over time, towards The BodyWise Journey approach which I now bring to my work.
It has shaped not only how I work with others, but how I understand and relate to myself. For me, this is about embodying what I share with others: becoming curious, listening to the body, developing a kinder relationship with ourselves and recognising the wisdom of our nervous system.
Remember, you don’t have to force yourself to change.
For me, trauma-informed therapy isn’t about fixing what is wrong with you. It is about becoming curious about what is happening within you.
What is your body telling you? What happens when you feel overwhelmed?
Where do you notice tension, numbness, restlessness or disconnection?
What emotions might be asking to be acknowledged?
Sometimes the first step isn’t changing anything at all.
It is simply learning to notice. A gentle invitation to listen
You don’t need to know anything about somatic therapy to begin listening to your body.
You can start right where you are now:
Pause. Notice your breath.
Feel your feet on the ground. Notice what you can sense in your body.
And instead of immediately asking, “How do I get rid of this feeling?”, perhaps ask:
“What is my body telling me right now?”
There may be more wisdom there than you realise.

This gentle somatic exploration offers an opportunity to pause, notice and listen to your body without needing to fix or change anything.
You don’t need any previous experience. Just bring yourself, a comfortable space and a little curiosity. 💚💙💜
Sometimes, reconnecting with ourselves begins simply by learning to listen.
